It is October 7 and according to the past, the monsoon should be long over. But nothing seems to be happening as expected. You may have read about the horrible floods in Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh following a drought. This monsoon season there has been less rain than usual here in Mussoorie, but we’ve had a fair bit the past week. Last Thursday we walked to Library Bazaar and back, stopping for lunch at a Chinese/Thai restaurant near the bookshops in Kulri (the pad thai was recognizable, not too bad). While we were sitting in the upstairs dining room looking down on the bookstores, it began to pour. Eventually it let up and we managed to walk home between the light drops.
On Sunday we returned from Dehra Dun in a drenching rain that began as soon as we reached Rajpur. The traffic was horrendous so our driver took the back road through Jharipani and Barlowganj. It was still coming down when we reached the Redburn Corner below Char Dukan, the shortest way to our house. Of course we had not taken umbrellas with us, so we ran with our backpacks along the streaming path. Thank goodness we were arriving at home where we could change into dry clothes and drape our things around the house to dry the best they could.
Tuesday afternoon the rain hit again after a fairly clear morning. This time I purchased a gold Woodstock umbrella so I'll have one at each location and won't be caught without one again.
